Rihanna and Lupita Nyong'o Are Making That Twitter-Inspired Heist Film

Netflix has officially signed on to make the film—directed by Ava DuVernay and written by Issa Rae—that all started out as simple Twitter fantasy.

After at least partially helping make Donald Trump president and giving some kid a year's worth of Wendy's chicken nuggets, Twitter is now responsible for getting two mega stars together for a forthcoming new film that all started as a joke. According to Entertainment Weekly, Rihanna and Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong'o are actually going to make a film solely based on a viral photo they took together at Paris Fashion Week.

According to Jezebel, the photo, originally taken in 2014, took off after Tumblr user @elizabtchtaylor posted it and quipped that the pair looked like "they're in a heist movie with Rihanna as the tough-as-nails leader/master thief and Lupita as the genius computer hacker." Then Twitter user @1800SADGAL posted the photo in April, adding she thought Rihanna likely "scams rich white men" in this hypothetical movie plot.

The two stars then sounded off on Twitter to give their personal stamp of approval on @1800SADGAL's proposed plot:

Now it looks like the film will actually make it onscreen, after Netflix reportedly shelled out an undisclosed amount in negotiations at Cannes this week to create it. According to EW, the streaming giant "landed the project in a very aggressive bid, beating out multiple other suitors."

Ava DuVernay, the director behind Selma and 13th, is set to direct the film, and Issa Rae, the actress and creator of HBO's Insecure, is going to pen the screenplay, presumably using the crowdsourced plot as a jumping off point. A spokesperson for Rae assured Vanity Fair that the Twitter users who helped dream up the film will be credited and included in the filmmaking process.

DuVernay also commented on the news Monday, heading to Twitter to tease the new project, which will likely start production in 2018.
