K-HOLES, KEEPING IT GAY

For a couple of years now many of us at

Vice

have been in love with a band called K-Holes. It's a band made up of two couples and two other people. Most of them are originally from Atlanta and orbit around the Monster Island scene, sharing members with other bands and junk. K-Holes have been pretty different every time I've seen them but they're always loud as hell. It's real noisy and then there's some sax. Occasionally Jack Hines will turn into Bo Diddley. You think you know what it is and then it shifts into something else. They've finally released a full-length record after a few sloppy years of bumming around and it's on

if you want it. They also made this really, really gay video.

Vice: What's "Short Zippers" about?

Jack:

"Short Zippers" is about a mystical cloud that hangs around degrading everyone's mind.

The last time I interviewed you about the K Holes, two years ago, your band had no girls and was temporarily called the Gay Holes. Now you got this gay-ass video. What's with you and gay stuff?

K-Holes embrace gay stuff out of a camaraderie of clandestine consciousness. It is not an aesthetic choice but a moral one.

Vashti:

Cameron and Jack are gay for each other, and I pretty much dream about the girls in the band every night. Gay-holes were because Julie and I were being gay in New Orleans. Everyone is gay, including you.

Cam:

Boys will be Boys.

But seriously, are the K Holes gay music by straight people? Are there any actual gay guys in your fake-gay fetish video? Do you ever indulge in blood play?

Jack:

That is NOT a fake-gay fetish video and K-Holes are NOT gay music by straight people. We DEFY all of your attempts to understand us. As for blood play, we don't play at anything. This is serious fucking business.

Vashti:

Most of the boys in the video are gay, including the director. Sometimes before shows we light a candle and prick our fingers and exchange our diseases with one another. It really puts us in the mood.

Cam:

Sometimes it's nice to watch things that aren't straight.

Sean, your main gay in your video, refused to answer my interview questions because they're too stupid and not worth his time. Do you think my questions are too stupid? Vashti:

Did Sean say that!? Haha, yeah these questions are kinda dumb.

Jack:

I wouldn't say your questions are stupid. You regard K-Holes with merely a passing fancy, whereas it is to us, as I said, serious fucking business. There is no reason that it should be serious fucking business to you, and I thank you for your passing fancy.

What's that thing on the cover of your new album? Is your track listing made out of cocaine?

Vashti:

The cover is a photo of a secret society known as the Holey Ones. The track listing is made out of diamond dust.

Some of my favorite times have been riding in the back of a car with you and Julie, your wife/bandmate, and all of us singing along while you play guitar. You turned me onto John Prine this way. What are your favorite John Prine songs?

Jack:

My favorite John Prine song is probably "Come Back to us Barbara Lewis Hare Krishna Beauragard." The man is a true wordsmith and an American treasure.

What else are you into these days?

Vashti:

I'm into black.

Cam:

Crawfish.

Jack:

I'm into fake-gay fetish videos and rolling cigarettes out of butt tobacco that I find in ashtrays. NICK GAZIN
