Every year, VICE puts on a photo show at the Scion gallery in L.A. This year’s show was curated by Jonnie Craig, who dug out 60 works by 18 of our favourite photographers from all corners of the world. The collective theme was “youth”. Here’s Jonnie explaining his favourite photos…

“We found this water tower while on a skate trip to Malmo, and decided to climb up it to watch the sunset and smoke a cigar that we’d been saving all day from a 7/11. It tasted awful, but we smoked it anyway. Just before we did that I shot this photo.”

“I decided to put this Peter Sutherland picture in the exhibition because it feels like the grown-up knowing hands always telling you the rights and wrongs when you’re young. Even though they’re mostly right, you never want them to be.”

“I could get all into why I like this photo by Jerry Hsu, making myself sound stupid for going bonkers over a photo of a cat doing a “teamwork five” with people. So I’ll let you come to your own conclusions with this one.”

“This photograph is from a series by Seth Fluker called Before Things Change, consisting of pictures he took of chemical waste left over in the sink after washing dishes at his dead-end-rent-covering job at Whole Foods. For me, this series is about dreaming and being able to look at the shittiest of situations and see something beautiful.”

“This is a picture by Sean Vegezzi, a young New York photographer, from a series about him and his friends’ adventures painting graffiti in New York’s subway. I like that his images aren’t about the graffiti itself, but about the kids and the enjoyment that surrounds it. It’s refreshing to see a photo series about graffiti that isn’t really about the graffiti.”
