First Nation is Melissa, Nina, and Kate. They’ve been jamming out together on some far-out vibes for about two years now. The culmination of said jamming will be a jamtastic album out on Animal Collective’s label, Paw Tracks, in the very near future. In the meantime, they’ve been touring with the Collective and BARR, which sounds like the kind of awesome line-up you’ll reminisce about in ten years and feel really chuffed for having gone to see. Melissa plays drums, Nina plays guitar, and Kate plays keyboards and drumpads. But they also switch around a lot because they’re best friends and sharing is fun. They all sing together too. All this makes for a soothing, organic sound that makes you feel like Meg being rocked to sleep by that giant caterpillar woman in A Wrinkle in Time. We wanted to have the band do a pie-eating contest, and the winner would get to be boss of the band for one month. However, it turns out Nina is vegan and it’s really hard to find vegan pies. So instead we got vegan cupcakes. These things were actually so heavy and chewy that it ended up being almost as intense as eating a whole pie, albeit much, much quicker. Anyway, here’s how the contest went: Vice: On your mark, get set, go! [The girls dig in] Nina: Oh man, these things are chewy. Kate: I need milk. [More chewing] Melissa: Done! You won! You finished the cupcake in 31 seconds. Melissa: That was a cinch. Now you get to be boss of the band for a month. What are you gonna have them do? Melissa: Oh no, I’m a terrible boss. I don’t know… Nina: How about if we bring you beer and popcorn every day for a month? Melissa: Aw, that’s so nice. Thanks, you guys. MEG SNEED
First Nation’s debut seven-inch, Coronation, is out now on Paw Tracks. A full-length is due out in May.
