Hip-Hop Pot Reviews

You know how certain foods taste better with certain wines? Well, certain rap songs just sounds better with certain strains of weed. We break it down for you.

You know how certain foods taste better with certain wines? And how really snobby wine people take pride in shoving their noses in the air while discussing different types of grapes and processes of fermentation? At VICE, we take pride in shoving our noses into dank clouds of smoke while discussing different types of highs and levels of THC. We also happen to know how certain songs just sound better after you’ve smoked a certain strain of weed. So here are some of our most sophisticated hip-hop pot pairings:

"T.A.P." by Wiz Khalifa feat. Juicy J (Produced by SpaceGhostPurrp) paired with Blue Dream

The closest we'll ever be to floating above the clouds in the private plane Wiz Khalifa boasts about in "T.A.P." is getting high on some Blue Dream weed. The Blueberry and Haze hybrid perfectly matches the mellow beat and repetitive lyrics of the song, which feature an oh so smooth verse by Juicy J. Since Blue Dream is primarily a sativa, it provides a heightened cerebral high that elevates our minds and allows our thoughts to make sense of Khalifa's copious metaphors for marijuana. Like Khalifa says: “roll it up, light it up, take a puff, let’s take a plane.” Bon voyage!

"Bitches Ain’t Shit Freestyle" by Gunplay paired with Sour Diesel x Afghan

Nothing could go better with the offkilter flow of the Miami MC and Rick Ross protege, Gunplay, than the mutant NYC Sour Diesel x Afghan strain. The way Gunplay combines the intensity of shout-rappers like Waka Flocka Flame with the street-consciousness of a vintage UGK, is similar to the way our favorite Big Apple strain mixes the lemon tang of Sour Diesel with the heavy smoke taste of Afghan weed. This brand of maryjane is known for its euphoric, creativity-inducing buzz, which is perfect for urban exploration—and even decoration, seeing as Gunplay himself is shown in this video spray-painting some street art.

"S.C.O.S.A." by Flatbush Zombies (Produced by Erick Arc Elliot) paired with Master Kush

We were in desperate need of a strongly sedative strain like Master Kush after being freaked the fuck out by this song's bouncing horror synths and guttural low-register vocals, not to mention Meech's possession/overdose at the climax of the clip. The high concentration of indica in this Hindu Kush x Skunk hybrid will make you comatose, which has to have something to do with being the "undead," right?

Hodgy Beats – Samurai (Produced by Jonti Danimals) paired with Strawberry Cough

The whimsical, digitized sound and even rhythmic coughing of Hodgy Beats's "Samurai," makes us feel nostalgic for the video games and bong hits of our youth. And nothing recalls the sweetness of adolescence quite like Strawberry Cough—its thick, fruity smoke makes us cough like it’s our first time (aww!) before lifting us up into lush reveries of class-cutting and Nintendo-playing in our best friend's basement. Man, is it us or can you actually hear the pixels?

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony - 1st of tha Month (Produced by DJ U-Neek) paired with L.A. Confidential

Although Bone Thugs-N-Harmony hail from Cleveland, it's hard not to taste the West Coast flavor of their 1995 classic, "1st of Tha Month," which is why we felt the need to taste some of the spicy, resinous flavor of L.A. Confidential. Nothing defines carefree California like state-sponsored smoke-outs with this 100 percent indica strain. Literally a clone of the powerful OG Kush, L.A. Confidential captures the OG spirit of Bone Thugs, our favorite “fiends for the green leaves.”

On the P.S. tip, don't you think pot looks like chunks of mold up close?
