Loud Explosion Spooks Zach Johnson During His Backswing, Makes Him Jump

Zach Johnson nearly jumped out of his shoes when a loud explosion sounded behind him during a putt on the 16th hole of the John Deer Classic.

This is pretty weird! While Zach Johnson was preparing to putt for a birdie and a share of the lead at the John Deere Classic—during his actual backswing—a crazy loud explosion went off somewhere behind him, causing him to jump from fright. At first, it seemed like he might have been having a little fun with the moment, but it probably was scary as shit.

Think about how quiet a golf course is—you can only hear the birds—and how focused these guys get when they're ready to make any shot, let alone a putt. Johnson had the entire world blocked out and then BAM! welcome back to Earth. The broadcast speculated that it could have been the boat passing by, or fireworks, or a truck backfiring, or maybe even hunters in the area, who knows? It had so much force it shook the cameras. Johnson took some time to regroup, but he missed the putt and had to settle for par and eventually finished at 19 under.

Tom Gillis finished at 20 under, while wunderkind Jordan Spieth and Danny Lee look to force a playoff.
