England Captain Steph Houghton Gets Hit Right in the Teeth on Missed Header

England captain Steph Houghton got a mouthful of a French player's head after both players were battling for position on a header.

France hung on to beat England 1-0 in their opening match of the Women's World Cup and it was bruising affair for both sides. France were pressuring England right on the doorstep of the goal and a deflected shot went high in the air just inside in the penalty box as Steph Houghton and Gaetane Thiney battled for position for either a clearance or a header on goal.

Houghton actually timed it right and got the header, but on the way down, Thiney's mis-timed header attempt caught her right in the grill. To add insult to facial injury, the ball went free to Camille Abily, who fired a shot on goal that hit the prostrate Houghton. Moments before Houghton caught the head to the face, Abily also got Laura Basset with an elbow to the face. Both women remained on the ground for a bit, but after checking to make sure everything was OK and all teeth were accounted for, both stayed in the match.
