Augmented Skateboarding Is Off The Hook

Riding the metaphysical wave.

For the Australian premiere of Tron: Legacy, interactive designers ENESS developed 3D mapping software to trail the moves of skaters along a steel half-pipe. Using infrared lights along with a camera to track the skaters’ positions, each rider wore an iPod Touch equipped with ENESS’s custom-built app, which measured the boarders’ air time and positioning, triggering and projecting stunning visuals that complimented their moves…even when they wiped out. One of the skateboarders said that the experience “was like being in a computer game in real life.”

ENESS aren’t the only ones bridging the gap between virtual and physical in the skateboarding realm. Creator Sebastian Denz takes skateboarding photography into the third dimension with his unique stereoscopic images. Check out the process and sources of inspiration behind Denz’s work here.
