Public Opinion Shifts After Governor Ahok Meets Saudi King

A meeting between the embattled Christian governor and King Salam might help turn the Jakarta governor election.

Jakarta Govorner, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama AKA Ahok, shook hands with Saudi Arabia's King Salman at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport last Tuesday, sparking a meme and bruising the ego of FPI leader Habib Rizieq.

Political expert Wempy Hadir claims that, psychologically, Ahok's encounter with King Salman can help change the current negative public perception of him.

"King Salman, the leader of the most powerful Muslim country in the world together with a governor on trail for blasphemy, it's pretty interesting. At the last trial, the leader of the FPI refused to shake hands with Ahok, while the King of Saudi Arabia did," said Wempy.

According to Wempy, if the moment can be capitalized by Ahok's campaign team, it can be a coupe for the embattled governor. "Theres a dynamic at play developing in the eyes of the public. Ahok's moment with King Salman can improve his electability," said Wempy told VICE Indonesia.

FPI's leader, Habib Rizieq, has unsuccessfully tried to set up a meeting with King Salam. Rizieq allegedly cancelled his appearance at King Salman's speech in The House of Legislators. Rizieq's attorney, Kapitra Ampera, strongly lobbied DPR officials for an exclusive meeting with King Salman.

King Salman had a pretty hectic schedule on Wednesday. After finishing sunah prayer at Istiqlal Mosque, he will meet local Islamic organization leaders and important figures at Merdeka Palace. It's been reported that 28 figures have been invited, including PBNU's chairman Said Aqil Siradj, MUI's chairman Ma'aruf Amin, and PP Muhammadiyah's Haedar Nasir.
