Kate Reynolds From Fashion Label PAGEANT Created Shoe Designs for Patrick Dangerfield and Kim Ravaillion

I've always loved playing with a mix of unusual textures, futuristic sports-inspired fabrications, and diverse pop cultural influences

This article is presented in partnership with NIKEiD. In this series we pair creatives with athletes to create custom shoe designs.

Kate Reynolds is the co-founder of Melbourne-based label PAGEANT, which she established in 2010 with business partner Amanda Cumming. The brand has gained a cult following for collections that cleverly bring together sportswear and high fashion influences, often using technical fabrics. Last year they took away the esteemed Tiffany & Co National Designer Award. We teamed Reynolds up with Geelong Cats' Patrick Dangerfield and netball star Kim Ravaillion to create some bespoke shoe designs. You can read about her design decisions below.

Patrick Dangerfield

I've always loved playing with a mix of unusual textures, futuristic sports-inspired fabrications, and diverse pop cultural influences through my work at PAGEANT and freelance styling. My direction for Patrick's shoe design was inspired by his love of fishing and spending time on his boat, the aerodynamic design of aquatic performance boats, and the Stars Wars character R2-D2 (my favourite droid). Patrick said he was drawn to blue and white, which happen to be the Geelong Cats colours, so I wanted to create a pared back colour palette by mixing monochromatic fade, solid colour and reflective/metallic elements to create harmonious contours within the shoe. To complete the shoe design, I personalised the tongues with DANGER in 'binary blue' to remind Patrick to live up to his name on the field.

Kim Ravaillion

In Kim's shoe design I've tried to capture the high energy and euphoria of playing and winning a netball game by using an intense acidic-pop colour palette. '90s sports, street and club wear, my favourite artist Isa Genzken, and Kim's active lifestyle were all influences. In my work I tend to go for diverse and vibrant palettes, so it was great that Kim is into bold patterns and colours (her favourite being purple) too. I decided to mix up a combination of elements—solid colour, a fade, and speckle—to create an overall dynamic visual pattern throughout the entire form of the shoe. I personalised the top of the tongues with the initials KR to remind Kim to stay positive and motivated when she's in the gym and on the court.
