Today the soccer world wakes up to some sad news. Honduran international Arnold Peralta was murdered in a parking lot in La Ceiba, Honduras.

"Police said no suspects were in custody and the motive for the attack was unknown," reports The Guardian. "In a second statement later, officials ruled out robbery as a possible motive."

Over the last decade or so, Honduras has become one of the world's most dangerous countries. According to 2012 World Bank statistics, which happen to be the most recent, Honduras had the world's highest murder rate: 90 per 100,000 people. To put that in perspective, the 2014 murder rate in Chicago, a city many Americans consider particularly dangerous, was about 15 per 100,000, according to FBI statistics.

Earlier this year, VICE made a documentary about the country's most dangerous city, San Pedro Sula:

Arnold Peralta made 26 appearances for the Honduran national team. As a youth, he captained the U20 team.

Twitter is full of condolences.
