Lyrics Illustrated: The Monsters Edition

Lobsters! Octopus! And, erm, a steam iron!
August 21, 2012, 11:00pm

The first time I wrote this column, I pretended to pick songs at random (soz). The second time I subtly chose songs that I thought were cool. This time around, I’ve chosen songs that have monsters or whatever in their title. My tiny mind almost exploded from all the possible options, but I plumped with these three. If you have any burning requests for illustrated critters though, leave them in the comments (please do my work for me.)

The B52’s: "Rock Lobster"

In America everyone loves and respects The B-52’s, but in the UK, they're really underrated. Most people think of them as a joke band because they put out songs like "Rock Lobster" and "Love Shack" and they appeared in The Flintstones film. Oh and their costumes, topics, album artwork and general demeanour. OK, fine, so everything about them is pretty confusing for a country who played Joy Division during the Olympic opening ceremony.

Anyway, this is how I imagine the rock lobster. He likes Danzig, because he's a badass.

Black Sabbath: "Iron Man"

Did you know that the working title for this song was "Iron Bloke"? Can you imagine forcing a whole generation of Americans to say "bloke"? That would have been amazing.

Anyway, it was a toss-up between this and "War Pigs_"_ for my compulsory Black Sabbath selection. But "Iron Man" lucked out as I really like drawing inanimate objects with faces. There's still plenty of time for me to draw a pig in camo, marching into a battlezone with an assault rifle.

The Beatles: "Octopus' Garden"

I have this fictional scenario in my head where Ringo presents this song to Paul and John, and then Paul goes off and records "Maxwell’s Silver Hammer" and "Mean Mr.Mustard" to put Ringo back in his place. Like: "Just so you know, I can out-twee you any day, fat lad". Still, "Octopus’ Garden" is a rad opportunity for me to draw an octopus, so cheers for that Ringo!

See you next time!
