Insult to Injury: Week Ending 1/10 with Stuart Braithwaite of Mogwai

Here's what the Noisey editors were listening to this week while telling you what to listen to.

Jay-Z with pornstars.

Welcome to Insult to Injury. Every Friday, the Noisey editors congregate here in a post-karaoke hangover haze to collect what they've been listening to all week. Today, we are joined by Stuart Braithwaite of Mogwai, who may or may not be into karaoke, we're not sure…

Beastmilk - "Death Reflects Us"
I really like that Spanish band called Beastmilk. I don't know. It's a style I like—a bit 80s goth rock. The songs are really good. The style of music isn't particularly very progressive, but it's just really good and I've been listening to it a lot.

Mally Mall and Tyga feat. Sean Kingston, French Montana, and Pusha T

- "Wake Up in It"

When I was a freshman at the University of North Carolina, Sean Kingston played a concert in a parking lot that I didn't go to, probably because I was drinking in a dorm room like any other self-respecting 18-year-old. But I should have, because little did I—or anyone, really—realize that he'd end up popping up on one of the sleeper jams of recent memory. This lineup might seem like somebody put the last five years of pop-rap in a hat and drew a bunch of names at random, but sometimes you just need a motley assemblage of random dudes to create supreme beauty.

Radiator Hospital

- “Your Boyfriend”

My brain works like this: I can only focus on, max, three things at any given time in my life. But I can

really

focus on em. So like, sometimes I’ll be super productive at work but forget to wear pants to the office. This week, my brain was entirely zoned in on getting these Marked Men shows booked which was difficult because who the fuck is worthy of playing with the great and powerful Marked Men? I’ll tell you who. Radiator Hospital, that's who. I caught them this week and they were predictably awesome. See this video, taken by my friend and internet celebrity Tim, for visual explanation of why. So yeah, if you were lucky enough to get tickets to the show before they sold out, prepare to have your minds blown AND OH MY GOD WHERE ARE MY PANTS?

My Panda Shall Fly

- "Crac"

I love Suren Seneviratne. He's a Sri Lankan-born, London-based artist who makes bonkers electronica. This latest tune, off his new six-track cassette sounds like an intergalactic fight taking place 20 leagues under the sea so that the space lazer's sonic boom echoes aquatically. The pace lollops. "Crac" was originally premiered over at our sister site

Thump,

which is all about dance music. Hey, it's Friday: LET'S DO THIS!

Drake

- "We Made It" & "Trophies"

Last night, I went to Beloved, my favorite bar in Brooklyn, to meet some friends. It turned out that World's Fair was DJing, which was awesome because a.)

we love those dudes

, b.) not that many people were at the bar, and c.) this caused Noisey contributor

Ernest Baker

to repeatedly yell at Nasty Nigel (who was at the time manning the boards) to play Drake's "We Made It" and "Trophies" while Noisey guest editor

Lauren Nostro

ran around in circles. Surprisingly, nobody was hurt.

Ja'mie (Private School Girl)

- "Learning to be Me"

I've watched the entire series of Ja'mie at least five times in the last three weeks. Yes, there are parts of it that make me feel uncomfortable—the whole Kwame thing isn't funny, except that when he sent her a dick pic and that's solely because of the way Ja'mie says "dick pic." But there's highlights and one of them is this stupid song Ja'mie made up called "Learning to be Me" which she performs and ends up stripping down to her underwear to in the finale (SPOILER ALERT). The only reason I like this song is because I have sung it every morning in the shower this week and I truly relate to it because at the end of the day, aren't we all just learning to be ourselves? I know, I'm learning to be me.

Clockcleaner - "Divine Hammer"
Wednesday, I caught Dark Blue, the new project featuring members of Paint it Black, Ceremony, Puerto Rico Flowers and of course the amazing and much missed Clockcleaner. Dark Blue's stuff leans gothic, but Clockcleaner's approach was definitely more noisy and caustic post-punk across a pair of LPs. Dig into this bonus jam from their final entry in 2007, Babylon Rules, a cover of The Breeders favorite "Divine Hammer".
