Brian McCann Rumbles Home From First To The Delight Of Joe Girardi

Brian McCann got home eventually, and cracked Joe Girardi up in the process.

Catchers are not generally known for their speed, so when they have to run it's usually laborious. In the fifth inning tonight against the Rays, Mark Teixeira hit a triple with Brian McCann on first base and McCann had to really turn on the jets propellers to keep the play going. Wil Myers mishandled it briefly out in right field, making it a near certainty that third base coach Rob Thomson was going to send McCann home.

The GIF doesn't do total justice to how long it took McCann to score, although you can get the idea if you contrast the pumping arms and legs with the actual ground covered, especially at the end. You can almost hear the goddammit, goddammit, goddammit inner monologue. Probably the best way to understand the ordeal McCann went through, though, is to watch the reactions from Joe Girardi and Tony Peña. As former catchers, they feel the pain, yet can't help but laugh at the sweaty slab of meat that finally walked into the dugout. Big guys running: always funny.
