Etsy merch makes ephemeral political identity content physical and permanent, immortalizing them in the form of bobbleheads, coasters, laptop stickers, bastardized votive candles, and more. Remember when that bird landed on Bernie Sanders’ podium in 2015? When a young, hip Barack Obama smoked a cigarette on camera? When it was still funny to imply Ted Cruz is the Zodiac Killer? Etsy capitalized on each of these moments, selling products designed to become obsolete—or worse, harbingers of a darker political moment still to come.“Etsy is firmly committed to the safety of our marketplace, and our seller policies prohibit items that promote hate, incite violence or endorse harmful misinformation. We prohibited listings related to “QAnon” in early October in accordance with these policies, and we have been aggressively removing emergent listings that are prohibited following the deeply troubling events at the US Capitol.
Although QAnon merchandise has been banned for months, until recently a search for “QAnon” returned results, but not for QAnon merchandise. To avoid confusion, we recently changed our algorithm so that when a user searches for “QAnon” it now returns zero results. This update had been planned well before the publication of this article. Our teams are vigilantly monitoring this evolving space and will continue to update our policies and enforcement in order to keep our marketplace safe."
