I feel like all of the bands that were part of the chillwave "movement," from Panda Bear to the headdress-wearing local dude pecking away at softsynth presets while opening for Panda Bear, were trying to make the music of Paco Sala. And failing. They were failing because, while the great promise was of pop music that was also weird or daresay avant-garde (can you even believe it?!), the result was really mostly just easy listening for cool kids.Pardon the blanket shit just taken on perhaps your favorite genre of music/band, but beyond that stuff there is a whole world steeped in the truly strange and sublime: music with the violence of noise, the disassociated threat of a David Lynch hallway, and pop warmth capable of declaring itself without falling into a psuedo-ironic cornball stupor. Find the entire just-out Paco Sala record, Put Your Hands on Me, at Digitalis, but until then here's the lead track, "Impossible Places" (plus highly complementary and NSFW visuals).Make your summer an actual dreamscape, and I'll see you on the other side.
