Tinder now has 40 options for gender instead of just 2

Tinder, the most popular dating app on the planet, today announced that it is doing away with binary gender options for users.

People swiping on Tinder will now have 39 built-in choices for gender identity and the option to create a custom identity. They will also be able to choose to display their identity on their profiles. The update was developed by Tinder in cooperation with the LGBT advocacy group GLAAD, and was timed to coincide with Transgender Awareness Week.

In the past, Tinder has had trouble with users who don’t fit in the male/female gender binary. Last year, trans people on Tinder said that they were being kicked off the app, ostensibly after being reported by other users for being trans. Since then, Tinder has been working with GLAAD and other advisers from the LGBT community to figure out how to make the service more inclusive.

“Tinder’s update allows trans users to be themselves on the platform, and makes it clear that Tinder is committed to inclusion,” GLAAD media director Nick Adams said in a statement. “This update reflects a growing awareness that trans people are part of the fabric of everyday life, which in turn accelerates acceptance for transgender and gender non-conforming people.”
