Mike Trout Steals Third With Incredible Sliding Swim Move

Mike Trout stole third with a ridiculous slide that fooled the umpire and needed to be challenged and overruled.

In the fifth inning against the Red Sox last night, Mike Trout tried stealing third and was called out by third base umpire John Tumpane, who had a front row seat to the play. Trout immediately motioned to the dugout to review it because he knew he had just pulled off a magic trick with his slide to avoid a tag. The closest third baseman Brock Holt got to making the tag before Trout touched the bag was tagging his own foot.

The throw came to the front of the bag and as Trout was sliding head first he pulled his left arm back and reached around for the other side of the base with his right hand. At this point, Holt had yet to apply a tag, but Trout's momentum kept him going past the bag while also rolling over on his side, so he had to use his right leg to remain on the base. His momentum still kept him going until he was finally able to clamp down on the bag with his toes and stop himself. It's like one of those disaster movie scenes when the school bus finally stops rolling and comes to a halt right at the ledge of the cliff.

After review, the umpires saw that once Trout grabbed on with his right hand, he never lost contact with the base and the ruling on the field was reversed. Kole Calhoun then drove Trout in with a single to push the Angels lead to 5-3, and they went on to win 12-5.
