CoCo Vandeweghe Calls Carmelo Soft After Second-Round Win at Wimbledon

CoCo Vandeweghe, Kiki's niece, had some harsh words about Carmelo Anthony after she won her second-round match at Wimbledon.

This is the strangest, greatest post-match quote I've seen in some time. CoCo Vandeweghe—niece and grandaughter to former Knicks Kiki and Ernie, respectively—beat Karolina Pliskova 7-6 (5), 6-4 in the second round at Wimbledon and after the match unloaded, for no particular reason, on Carmelo Anthony.

"I just feel that Carmelo, he is a bit soft," Vandeweghe said, after her second-round, 7-6 (5), 6-4 victory over Karolina Pliskova. "And now this is just my own personal opinion. I think he is soft. I don't think he has a killer instinct in his eyes, at least this last year. "And I also think he needs people around him that have that killer instinct, because then that brings it out of you," Vandeweghe said. "And with him taking such a high salary, I think that kind of handcuffs the Knicks in being able to get those types of players that are getting big contracts. There's no way around that."

This is amazing. There are so many questions, such as: why? Not to mention, how? Filip Bondy of the New York Daily News, the only person who seems to have the quote, does not go into detail about how victorious tennis player CoCo Vandeweghe came to call Carmelo soft and lacking in a killer instinct. Maybe he asked her about it? Maybe she took it upon herself because she is a frustrated Knicks fan. We just don't know. There is a history there, though: Kiki Vandeweghe actually drafted Carmelo with the Nuggets.

CoCo did not just talk about Carmelo; she also questioned Phil Jackson's recent draft pick. She's not distraught by the idea of Kristaps Porzingis, but she has some concerns, as well as a not-totally-unreasonable request for the team: "I'm unsure about the first round draft pick…I just want one winning season. That would be nice."
