Seven Minutes Of Juan Uribe And Hyun-Jin Ryu Horsing Around, For The Road

The greatest (physical) comedy duo and most unlikely friendship in recent baseball memory was torn apart by a trade. Let's remember the good times.

The internet is not, on balance, a good or reasonable place. Everything is everywhere, screaming and wheedling and reaching into your pockets and showing you pictures of things you don't want to see that oh god oh wow, it turns out that picture is animated and is looping endlessly now. That is the internet, and that is not really what anyone would call good or cool, but also the internet is a place with an abundance of videos in which mismatched animals have become unlikely friends, and that goes some way towards evening things out.

These videos, as much as all the seamy, clammy, variously porny aforementioned stuff, have a way of making their way into our shared online consciousness even if we do not invite them there. There are rural octogenarians and Mormon missionaries without internet that have somehow seen the video in which a goat and a baby rhinoceros frolic in goofy tandem. They are better off for this, and so are we, and the fact that the comments below the video are clogged (probably) with Chemtrail garbage and abject and ungrammatical bigotry doesn't make the video any less appealing. Some things even the internet cannot touch.

It's not entirely fair or correct to say that the friendship between Hyun-Jin Ryu and Juan Uribe is like the friendship between a baby rhino and a galloping goat. It's not really unlike that, but Ryu and Uribe are people—people who, beyond both looking like characters from the legendarily boxy-torso'ed early video game RBI Baseball, would not seem to have much in common. Ryu speaks only a few phrases of English and no Spanish; Uribe speaks Spanish, a little English, and no Korean. This never interfered with the slap-fighting or goofing around with each other or, indeed, talking to each other. ""[You] see them out there talking with each other," Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis told MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez in 2013. "I mean, what can these two be possibly talking about, because they don't know any languages between them? I always wonder what they're talking about."

Whether it was that soft-cornered rectangularity or shared love of horseplay that brought them together, the two figured out. And while Wednesday's trade of Uribe to Atlanta—merely a traumatic rumor until recently—has separated the pair, this is not an ending. Juan Uribe is still one of the supreme humans of baseball. Hyun-Jin Ryu, injured shoulder and all, can be seen slurping noodles with almost unseemly vigor with just a click. We can remember the good times, and thanks to the video above—which is seven-plus minutes of these two goofballs goofing around—we can trust that they'll always be right here on the internet, where they belong.
