Vlsonn Makes Evil 808 Techno From Romania (Via Canada)

This is about as dark as it gets without having to call an ambulance.

There's a 'lil something happening in the space between bassy-tech music and techy-bass music, and Romanian-Canadian frontiersman Vlsonn (that's an 'L,' by the way) is onto some provocative tunage that exploits the whole spectrum. Don't load the guy with too many superlatives, though, he manages to be starkly modest when discussing his tunes: 'These 3 tracks [on his Drum Vehicle EP, released on Tessier-Ashpool] were picked from over a year's batch of songs when I was into the aggressive aesthetic of the warehouse techno revival…I tried to do something a bit different, not sure if that worked though."

He found inspiration for the tunes in some unusual places. Vlsonn explains, "At the time I was laying down the basic skeleton of tracks and watching BBC documentaries on silent to further the track in a direction or scrap the whole thing if it didn't work. I don't know what I was watching, though I know one of them was about the Caucasus Mountains."

"Zombie Zaire' was completed in a couple of hours; it was actually finished months before the other two, and didn't think it would be included on the release," he says. "It's one of the barest tracks I've ever produced. I don't remember what I was thinking at the time but I know I didn't want it to evoke any sort of emotion."

Well, sucks for you, Vlsonn, because you evoked one. It's a warm and fuzzy affection. I
