What in the World is Going On With the Sacramento Kings?

the Sacramento Kings are doing something. What that exactly is, is anyone's guess.

Yahoo's proprietary NBA rumor-dispersal algorithm Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting that the Sacramento Kings are looking into having Kentucky men's basketball coach John Calipari take over front office and coaching duties for the team. Calipari is a successful coach, and has a history with DeMarcus Cousins and the team's most recent draft pick Willie Cauley-Stein. He would also be the team's fourth coach in 12 months. What the hell is going on in Sacramento?

Going back to December, then general manager Pete D'Alessandro fired head coach Mike Malone, purportedly because of disagreements with owner Vivek Ranadive, and the team quickly went to shit. In February D'Alessandro hired George Karl as head coach, despite the reported disapproval of DeMarcus Cousins's camp. in April, Marc Stein reported that the then recently-hired Vlade Divac had emerged as the de facto general manager, leapfrogging D'Alessandro.

Divac was given the somewhat nebulous title of "vice president of basketball and franchise operations," but Ranadive considered him his top guy. Whatever the case, Divac is surely the guy now. D'Alessandro is now with the Nuggets, and quickly hired Malone to fill Denver's coaching vacancy. The Kings finished the season with a 29-53 record and then the snakes came out.

Karl was reportedly hellbent on trading Cousins, despite Cousins being one of the very best young players in the game; the front office seems just as hellaciously determined to keep him, for the same reason. Ranadive went so far as to go on the record to say the team had no interest in trading Cousins, as did Divac, who now appears to have gone silent.

To recap: the Kings fired their head coach in December, paving the way for George Karl, who was hired by a man whose authority was later usurped by the hiring of a VP of basketball and franchise operations. Karl wants to trade the only redeemable player on the roster, while the owner definitely does not. And now the Kings are openly courting John Calipari to replace both the head coach and the de facto GM. Or not.

So, for real—and this isn't even a rhetorical question—what the hell is going on in Sacramento?

Edit: An earlier version of this post said Divac had not addressed the situation since May, but he commented on it as recently as last week. I apologize for the error but still, what's going on with the Kings, man?
