Enigmatic Welsh Producer Ifan Dafydd is Back with the Magnificent "Eclipse"

As rich as a spoonful of red velvet cake.

Low-end-lurking producers love talking about the "golden days" of dubstep, when the wobbles were pure and Borgore was a mere twinkle in the Israeli army's eye. This time period has been nostalgized into the realm of myth, so maybe it's a blessing that Welsh producer Ifan Dafydd says he "missed the whole dubstep movement the first time round." Good for him. That's probably part of the reason why Dafydd's densely layered and painfully gorgeous productions sound so fresh. (Sidenote: enough with the James Blake comparisons already.) "Eclipse" comes at the end of Dafydd's yearlong hiatus, and it rolls along with sultry saxophone argeppios, ghostly moans and a woman crooning about the moon as richly as a spoonful of overpriced red velvet cake. It's elegant and jazzy, with the emotional maximalism that would leave Jamie xx, Flying Lotus and Bonobo shaking their fists saying, "Outplayed!"
