Lucas Melano Scores Ludicrous Goal to Advance Timbers to MLS Cup

Just about the nastiest way imaginable to advance to the finals.

There are a lot of ways to score a goal—all of them good. But none of them more artful, last-second, and astonishing than Lucas Melano's tonight in MLS Conference Finals. The man toed the end line for a logic-defying shot that is absolutely spectacular.

The game was marked by a harsh Texas downpour that kept ball control to a minimum. Dallas FC needed to go up two goals in order to take the game, but the Timbers' Fanendo Adi all but sealed the game with a 54th minute goal that ricocheted off the wet leg of Dallas' keeper Jesse Gonzalez. Dallas bravely responded with two back-to-back goals in four minutes that were ultimately rendered futile.

Then came Melano with his wonder goal—assisted by a tightly-controlled back heel—in the final minute of stoppage time to emphatically seal the Timbers' entry into the MLS Cup. What a way to get there.
