It's a pretty safe bet that anyone into the weirder, more experimental side of electronic music knows about Brisbane-based record label Room 40. For the last 15 years, the label - headed up by musician / sound artist / writer Lawrence English - has been releasing some of the most beautiful and challenging music around. Their label roster is impeccable, with acclaimed Aussies like Ben Frost, Robin Fox and Oren Ambarchi on the books, as well as international experimental heavyweights including Tujiko Noriko, Grouper and Rafael Anton Irisarri.

The label's latest signing is Mirko, a German-born Australian, now based in London. His debut EP (out now via Room 40's website for free) is three tracks of lush, dark, cinematic electronics. With pulsing analog synths swathed in field recordings and ambience, it's gorgeous, melancholy and undeniably widescreen.

It turns out that Mirko didn't just appear out of nowhere though. He's got an interesting musical pedigree, one that seems to belie his music's calm and subtlety. For the last few years Mirko has been Cut Copy's chief sound engineer, both in the studio and on tour. Before that, he was drummer in probably the raddest power pop band Brisbane ever produced, Sekiden.
