Cybele Malinowski has been part of the VICE Australia family since back in 2006 when she photographed our VICE Kills Summer party in Sydney. Our amazingly scenic, outdoor venue was rained out, but that didn’t stop everyone from having an incredible night. Nor did it stop Cybele from capturing the guys from the Black Lips on their first trip Down Under.

VICE: Hey Cybele, can you tell us the story behind this image?
Cybele Malinowski: A group of 200 wet kids were relocated from a rooftop party in Bondi into this tacky ballroom, after a huge downpour. It was a Vice Summer party. It was 2006. We were so out of place in this kitsch ballroom, it felt like a scene out of Twin Peaks. The Black Lips played on a make-shift stage at the front of the room which would normally bear witness to weddings, conferences and bah mitzvahs. Fuck summer and sun, the dim ballroom made it like a prom. It was awesome.

How was the gig?
They were so damn cool. They could have been playing to a crowd of 20,000 people, but instead it was just 200 kids standing eye to eye with the band as they smashed around on beer stained carpet and lino chairs.

Apart from it being a legendary night, is there anything else about this photo that makes it legendary?
The fact that photo was taken moments before the Black Lips exploded internationally. There was a momentum that was about to pop. They knew it, we knew it.

It looks like it. What tips do you have for capturing similarly legendary images?
Always have a camera on you, and don't be shy to ask someone to say cheese.
