We Went Backstage At EDC To Ask DJs Some Very Important Questions [Part I]

We snuck backstage to ask Electric Daisy Carnival's headliners a bunch of hard-hitting questions.

Amidst the spectacle of thousands of furry boots and glowing gloves, shooting fireworks, parading mushrooms and clowns and a rotating, LED-lit Ferris wheel, it's easy to lose track of the many DJs playing at Electric Daisy Carnival. Especially when they're not on stage, screaming at you to "Put your hands UUUUUP!!!!" Which is why we decided to sneak backstage to catch up with Canadian techno duo Art Department, progressive house superstar Thomas Gold , and dubstep whippersnapper Crizzly —and ask them some extremely pressing questions about raver chicks and silly outfits. Some of these dudes were running on no sleep. Others were just wasted. But all of them were lots of fun. Here are our findings.

ART DEPARTMENT

THUMP: What's the silliest thing you've ever worn?
Jonny White: I've pretty much dressed the same way since 1998.
Kenny Glasgow: One time I wore tights.

What's the best place you've ever been to a party?
KG: Panorama Bar. The DJ booth sounds so amazing in there. You cannot make any mistakes.
JW: I heard a couple.

What's your favorite quality in a raver girl?
JW: Furry boots.
KG: I'm a black guy, so I gotta say… a black booty.

If you could put anything in the world on your DJ rider, what would it be?
JW: Jack Daniels.
KG: Jack Daniels.

What's your bedtime tonight?
JW: None. I'm an insomniac.
KG: The afterparty is my hotel room.

THOMAS GOLD

THUMP: What's the silliest thing you've ever worn?
Thomas Gold: A jacket made out of fake fur. Maybe eight or nine years ago in Munich.

Did you wear anything under the vest?
There was a t-shirt, ya.

What's the best place you've ever been to a party?
One of the biggest shows I've ever done was in Roseland Ballroom in January. People were freaking out, and the energy was just… Wow. But other than that I like to party in Berlin, because you can go out at 3am and not worry about the time.

You think Berliners are less uptight than New Yorkers?
I think Berliners are just more relaxed. One of my favorite clubs, called Watergate, doesn't even have bottles.

So how do you get into Watergate?
Don't wear a button-down shirt. My friend actually got turned away for that. But I like New York because they put a lot more effort into production and decoration. There's more drama to support the music.

Who's your closest friend on the EDC lineup?
Steve Angello. I know him from when he picked one of my productions—all the Swedish guys have supported my tracks. I'm very close to Axwell as well. I really admire what these Swedish guys are doing. I think they're some of the best producers in the world.

No love for Berlin?
You can't compare the Swedes and Berliners. Berlin is very underground, minimalist and underground. They keep it as authentic as possible.

What's your favorite quality in a raver girl?
She should party hard.

If you could put anything in the world on your DJ rider, what would it be?
A beam machine to beam me to places. I could beam back home to say hello to my family.

What's your favorite track that you've made?
"Sing To Me." It's quite an emotional track. It starts very low and goes into big chord progressions. It perfectly reflects my style. Big beats with melodies, combined with punch drum sounds.

What's your bedtime tonight?
I have a flight right after the show at 11pm. I have four studio days in Berlin before I come back to the States for shows in Phoenix, Vegas and DC next week.

CRIZZLY

THUMP: What's the silliest thing you've ever worn?
Crizzly: I wore a silver sequined blazer to prom. I graduated in 2009.

What's the best place you've ever been to a party?
Hawaii. It looks like Jurassic Park. We ended the night at a hotel pool and everyone took their clothes off.

Who's your closest friend on the EDC lineup?
Probably Figure. We have a similar style, and I've always looked up to him. One day he put a comment on my song and I was like, "Holy crap!" I mean, I'm still some kid making music on my laptop.

What's your favorite quality in a raver girl?
Um, ass?

If you could put anything in the world on your DJ rider, what would it be?
Blueberry muffins because my MC loves them, and I have to agree with him. They're pretty awesome. Also, sour gummy octopus.

What's your favorite track that you've made?
"The Way We Ball." It was a remix of a Texas rapper Lil Flip, and just the fact that he acknowledged it, it was like I did it justice.

What's your best piece of rave advice?
Always be true to yourself.

Why are you such a badass?
Disagree. I know I'm not. I just sit at home and play videogames all day.
