Disposable Camera Potluck: Javeon

We let Javeon loose with a disposable and had a chat with PMR's new golden boy about being on one of the world's hottest labels.

Up until now, Javeon McCarthy has been PMR's most silent signing. He's been on their roster for two and half years, released a few sporadic tracks here and there, but it's his new single, "Lovesong" that's been getting us (and everyone else) excited. A master of that house-pop crossover that you know you love, we gave him a disposable camera and let him run wild.

Noisey: Hi Javeon. I tried to call you twice, but an angry Scottish woman picked up the phone.

Javeon: That was me! I was trying to mess with you.

Well it definitely worked, you have a very good accent. Whereabouts are you?

I’m back in Bristol for a couple of days, doing some phone interviews, working out, yno.

I can’t say I do, but fair play. What do you listen to when you’re in the gym?

I have my iPod on shuffle but to be honest, alot of it is my own music. I’m making my album at the moment, so it’s all on my ‘most listened’. I’m listening out for where it could sound better.

You work out listening to the sound of your own singing. Wow.

I know, it sounds really big headed doesn’t it?

A little. So I saw you at Fabric on Friday, nice set.

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. It was nice to be back on the stage, because I’ve just been working on my album recently. I would have liked to have been on a little later, but what can you do.

I don’t think Swindle [who was on after] would have been happy with that. Did you manage to catch anyone else?

Oh yeah, I stayed till about quarter past five. Saw my boy Joker, he was great. Skepta was doing a good job with him MCing as well- he was cracking me up when he was telling Joker off on stage. I wasn’t sure if he was being serious or not.

Do you and Joker know each other then?

Yeah, we were in Bristol growing up at the same time. We actually had a crew when we were like 13, there was about 30 of us. We tried to be like So Solid Crew, but we were called Cold Hearted Crew, but spelt with K’s.

That’s a bit Keeping Up With The Kardashians, isn’t it?

Exactly. Just like the Kardashians, but edgier.

Ha. I saw about 50 people wearing PMR t-shirts during your set- is that your doing? Do you force your crew to wear them?

Pretty much! They want to come and party, they’ve got to wear the t-shirt. Ha, nah, just kidding. We’re a pretty tight gang, it was good of them to come down.

PMR’s got a pretty impressive roster. Who are your favourite label mates?

Personally, Two Inch Punch and T. Williams. Me and T. Williams have come from the same grime/ garage background. Musically, definitely Two Inch Punch. He’s like my brother, whenever we work together it’s like magic.

Have you met everybody?

Everyone but Cyril Hahn.

He seems incredibly illusive.

Yeah, I got that vibe too. He looks like he’d be quite quiet, he’s got a quiet looking face. That’s alright though, because I’m the sort of person who’d come into a room and just say something stupid, break the atmosphere abit. We’ve spoken on twitter, and I’d definitely be up for working with him.

Get you, you party starter.

Don’t make me sound big headed! I’m not, I promise.

Yeah, alright then. When’s your next live date then?

I’ve actually got two shows on my birthday! I’ve never had to do that before. I’m starting off in Liverpool, and then heading down to Birmingham with Disclosure and Oneman. I’ve played both of those places before and I’m SO excited for it.

Which do you think is going to be better, Liverpool or Birmingham?

Hmmmm. Got to be Birmingham. I only say that because I know how big the venue is, and I love being on a stage that size. I’m going to eat it right up.

You’ve been signed to PMR for ages. How come it’s taken this long to get anything out?

Yeah I know right. I signed with them over two years ago! I released a few things last year, but since then I’ve just been working on the album, working on my sound and putting the album together. It has been a long time, but I think we all wanted to make sure it was right. I’m pretty pleased with it.

So you’ve got some disposable camera pictures for us. What can we expect?

Some funny, some serious, it’s a real mix. There’s a few of me and my crew at dinner.

That’s pretty serious. Any selfies?

No selfies! I don’t think I’ve taken a selfie that I’ve ever been happy with. I mean, I have taken a few, but I’ve just deleted them straight afterwards.

Well the world has those to look forward to. Cheers Javeon!
