PREMIERE: Watch The Green Seed's Bonkers Video for "Gotchoo"

Meet the Birmingham, Alabama, rap crew with an eclectic sound and a great sense of humor.

We like to talk about what hip-hop means, where it's headed, who its big players are, et cetera. We can get caught up in the grand dramas of the genre and its stars, and it can be easy to lose sight of some simple things: Namely, music is about having fun. Be silly, world! Go forth and create! Do some weird shit! Who cares!

I say this all because Birmingham, Alabama's The Green Seed are the kind of entertainers who might wring their hands a little bit about the State of Hip-Hop and make a song in which the hook references Beats by the Pound and uses the phrase "flavor in the rhyme," but they aren't going to beat you over the head with dusty revivalism. They're more of a throwback to the spirit of 90s hip-hop and groups like De La Soul or The Pharcyde, who often seemed happiest when they were busy being merry pranksters. The production is searing, psychedelic, and rock-tinged, with just enough boom bap energy to feel familiar.

The Green Seed's Complet spits absurdist lines like "It's a distraction to try to rescue the princess / That dame doesn't appreciate my prince quest," and the video for "Gotchoo" works in everything from colorful shots of the group as famous generals to beauty pageant queens to weird infomercials. FYI, that number in the infomercials actually works, so go ahead and give it a call. Let Complet and his accomplice R-Tist sell you some weird products, pals.

The video was directed by Petros, who has done videos for TV on the Radio, Ellie Goulding, and the Foo Fighters. It is dope. Check it out below.

"The 'Gotchoo' video is a small sample of the energy we bring to every facet of our music," The Green Seed said over email. "From the writing, to the performances, to the visual representation, we want to exude high level energy and creativity. We appreciate Petro (the director) for helping us bring that to the forefront."
