Moments Like this Never Last

The Fruity Sculptor

Some people look at watermelons and see art. They gaze at the fruit, judge its shape and ripeness, and think, “I shall carve into this melon, and by doing so, I shall release its soul."

It’s summer. You look at a watermelon and your first thought is, “Ah, nature’s sugary boob.” You scramble for a knife like a madman and carve that juicy oblong spheroid into morsels of webbed goo that will coat the area in and around your mouth with refreshment.

But some people don’t think that way. Some people look at watermelons and see art. They gaze at the fruit, judge its shape and ripeness, and think, “I shall carve into this melon, and by doing so, I shall release its soul. Much like Michelangelo saw figures screaming to be let out of their prisons of marble, I shall release weird portraits of celebrities from these majestic summer fruits!”

These people are called fruit carvers and Sergio Albani is one of them. His area of expertise is not actually portraiture but floral motifs, and his favorite thing in the world is “making shrimp boats out of pineapples.” In any case, we commissioned five celebrity portraits from Sergio. Voilà. Can you guess who they are? (Hint: One of them is Doogie Howser.)
