Roy Irwin’s Latest Song Is Perfect For When Parents Ask How You’re Doing

"Better Than Ever" is a scrappy nugget of pop melody.

Roy Irwin is honest even when he's not. “King of Pop”, the title track from the Auckland songwriter and guitarist's upcoming album was an upfront song about depression and the false sense of bravado alcohol and drugs can give you when you're feeling down.

Today he premieres "Better Than Ever", another track from from King Of Pop that is released digitally tomorrow via Spotify and with an upcoming vinyl release via Auckland label 1:12 Records.

Roy explains that the song is about those trivial conversations with friends or family where details of how you are really feeling are omitted. “In this case, a conversation with my Dad where I skip the parts about self-destruction and misadventure and just talk about the weather instead. It's a bit sarcastic but it's still true. It's fun and sometimes healthy to make light of your own "fucked up-ness”.”

It's a scrappy nugget of pop melody. Listen and enjoy.
