In her shaky performance on The Andrew Marr Show, Theresa May said, "We've got to listen to the electorate, listen to voters – the messages they were giving us."

Well Manchester clearly has a message for you, Theresa, and it's not one you're going to like. As the Tories began their conference in the city this weekend, Mancunians held a now-traditional "unwelcoming party", as 50,000 took to the streets to say "no more austerity" and wave banners reading "Tories Out".

The conference has a ring of steel around it that makes airport security look like a League Two stadium turnstile, but at least there's a "designated protest area" for anyone who wants to continue hurling invective at random party members.

We sent VICE photographer Chris Bethell to check out the protest.
