Ten months into Donald Trump’s presidency, construction is underway on prototypes for the “big, beautiful wall” that he repeatedly promised would separate the U.S. and Mexico during his campaign.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection released a video Tuesday of eight wall models being built earlier this month near San Diego. Customs said the 18 – to 30-foot prototypes “will inform future design standards.”
The Department of Homeland Security has said a wall could cost about $22 billion, while Senate Democrats estimate $70 billion. It’s still unclear how the wall would be funded.
No member of the House or Senate from the border region supports funding the wall, according to a Wall Street Journal survey of lawmakers in April.
