VCU Fans Get UMass and Refs to Fall for Fake Shot Clock Countdown

VCU fans fake out UMass and the referees with phony shot clock countdown.

Every home crowd at one point or another has tried the fake shotclock countdown, it usually doesn't work, but sometimes the stars align and we get a little bit of mischief mixed in with our basketball. VCU pulled it off against UMass this afternoon and not only did it fool Donte Clark into taking a disastrous shot, but more importantly, it also fooled the referees.

VCU recovered the ball after the terrible shot, but the referees blew the play dead for a shot clock violation. You can see the ref at the bottom center of the screen give the signal—tapping his head—that UMass didn't get a shot off in time. It's one thing for players to get frazzled when the crowd is doing this and forget to look at the actual shot clock, but the referees should probably be immune to this kind of hijinx. The Fans started their countdown about five seconds early and as you can clearly see, at least four seconds remained when Clark let the shot go. A long review followed the confusion but eventually VCU got the ball.
