DC's Giant Art Maze Is Open For Business

The colossal, inverted maze in the National Building Museum is open and it actually wants you to escape.

Back in April, we spotlighted the teaser for a 21st century take on the Minotaur's maze called AmBiGuity—and now the colossal beast is finally here. Conceived by BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) and installed at the National Building Museum in DC, AmBiGuity's walls curve downward, growing shorter the as they approach the center so you can see your way out. The further you delve into its depths, the process of exploring (and escaping) the labryinthine structure actually gets easier.

In the words of the designers, at its center "The maze becomes a panopticon that displays the interior in its entirety." The walls start at an intimidating height of 18 feet, but at the center even a child can see the correct path out. Once you reach the end, everything that was confusing and frustrating becomes clear—such is life.

The maze will occupy the National Building Museum until September 1 as part of its annual Summer Block Party. The captivating architectural experience is even rumored to be just a taste of an even larger BIG exhibition coming to the museum in the beginning of 2015.

The folks over at WorkZone filmed a great timelapse that offers insight into the creation of the strange structure. While the thing spans 61 square feet, when you see it build from the ground up, it doesn't look so intimidating. It's probably easier to get lost in WorkZone's timelapse than in that thing—right?
