Listen To Barefood's Heartfelt Single Off Their Mysterous Follow-Up to 'Sullen'

The song is more of what we love about Barefood. But big changes are right around the bend, said the band.

The latest single from Bekasi power trio Barefood captures the same fuzzy, poppy, 90s alt sound that earned the band critical acclaim with their first release Sullen. The band has its sound down to a science on "Milkbox." Distorted, yet accessible guitars? Check. Heartfelt lyrics you can't help but sing along to? Check. A wonderfully melodic solo? Check.

But guitarist Ditto Pradwito warned that "Milkbox" is sort of misleading. The band's still untitled (at least publicly) album isn't going to be Sullen Pt. 2. Barefood's new material is a bit more diverse than the three-piece power pop they've released before, Ditto said. Expect keyboards, trumpets, and slower, more contemplative tempo.

"We were curious as to how we would sound if we strayed away from the guitar-bass-drum formula," Ditto said, explaining that the new single was chosen "because 'Milkbox' sounds closest to the Sullen EP, so people will find it easier to digest."

It's been three-and-a-half years since Barefood released Sullen. That's a long time for a band in 2017, when a lot of rising indie bands release a stream of albums and songs in quick succession in order to keep the hype machine fed. So it's no surprise that Barefood has something else in mind for their next album.

"There's a lot of mid-tempo and even slow songs on it," Ditto said. "The new Barefood album will not grab you right away. That's all I can say for now."

But wait. Why the hell is this song called "Milkbox" anyway?

The band's bassist and singer Mamet explained that the name was a playful way to represent a new relationship. When a romance is starting out, it can be unpredictable and mysterious; something that only shows you want it wants, he said.

"You can't really see the milk, only the box," Mamet said.
