It's Time to Balance Out Stone Mountain's Confederate Monument with Carvings of Outkast

"I believe that Daddy Fat Sacks and Three Stacks should be carved riding in a Cadillac (as is their wont). This will help the new carving blend nicely with the Confederates who are on horseback."

America has been steadily cleansing itself of Confederate flag iconography in the weeks after the tragic shooting in Charleston, South Carolina. Walmart and Amazon have stopped selling rebel flag paraphernalia, and South Carolina has removed the flag from Capitol grounds, since, as Killer Mike puts it, "you do not fly the flags of losers over the winner's country."

Now, CNN reports that an online petition has sprung up to alter a Mount Rushmore-esque monument for Confederate soldiers carved into the face of Georgia's Stone Mountain. But instead of dynamiting the rock face into oblivion, the petitioners just want to add a couple more historical Georgians to balance things out—Big Boi and Andre 3000.

The current carving on Stone Mountain—basically a gargantuan boulder east of Atlanta—features Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. It's also the world's biggest bas-relief, featuring three full acres of Confederate faces. If the petitioners get what they want, those three acres will expand to include the cherubic face of Big Boi.

Earlier this week, the Atlanta chapter of the NAACP called for the removal of the carving, describing it as a "glorification of slavery and white supremacy." The chapter's president, Richard Rose, added that "the state should not be supporting or condoning white supremacy with my tax dollars."

A spokesman for the Stone Mountain Memorial Association responded to the outcry, saying the tourist attraction is actually maintained by revenues, not taxes. Either way, the monument continues to memorialize the Confederacy and, according to Rose, its accompanying museum is into revisionist history—spinning the Civil War as a war about states' rights.

While the heated back-and-forth between the NAACP and Stone Mountain raged, one brave man named Mack Williams emerged with his genius compromise: Add Outkast to the rock and call it good.

"I believe that Daddy Fat Sacks and Three Stacks should be carved riding in a Cadillac (as is their wont). This will help the new carving blend nicely with the Confederates who are on horseback," Williams wrote on the MoveOn petition.

The petition currently has over 8,000 of the 10,000 signatures needed before it gets sent over to the Georgia State House, The Georgia State Senate, and Governor Nathan Deal. Plus, Big Boi has already given it a thumbs up, so it's as good as done.
