For his direction on The Shape of Water, Guillermo del Toro nabbed the coveted Academy Award for Best Director.

This year's Best Director Oscar competition was slammed with big-name talent, including Greta Gerwig, Jordan Peele, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Christopher Nolan. Del Toro succeeds Damien Chazelle, who took home the Oscar in 2017 for La La Land.
