On the Streets With Some Real Gentlemen

We mobbed the streets for a good cause.

I had no idea what to expect when I pulled up to SCBD, in South Jakarta, on a vintage Honda Super Cub motorbike. The park was full of well-dressed men and classic motorbikes—Vespas covered in headlights, cafe races, and stripped down brat style motorcycles. The air smelled of fuel and exhaust. The sound of roaring engines was deafening.

This was the "Gentleman's Ride," an annual charity ride to raise money for prostate cancer and other men's health issues. It's basically a Movember, but in the form of a stylish, well-dressed cruise through the Indonesian capital.

Thousands of bikes took off from SCBD on a relaxed four-hour tour of Jakarta that looped back and ended with a party at Beer Garden SCBD. Sammy Bramantyo, the even't organizer, told me that 2,000 riders showed up, bringing in more than $13,500 USD for men's health charities and research institutions.

If you are interested in joining in for next year, head over to the ride's website and sign up.
