Terekke's New Trio Embrace Nocturnal Confusion on "Rx"

The track is off their debut EP for Purple Trax, 'Pt. 1.'

Brooklyn-based musician, photographer, and event promoter Erez Avissar, aka Weird Magic, has shared a deliciously nocturnal track by Wabi Sabi, his collaborative project with L.I.E.S.-affiliate Terekke and local producer/DJ Jan Woo. "Rx" is the closing tune on the trio's debut EP, entitled Pt. 1, and features the skeleton of what would otherwise be a pepped-up techno track—a busily tactile rhythm and a punchy, forward-leaning groove—but where we expect to see activity, the shades are drawn and the lamps are turned all the way off.

This is more a shadow of a techno track, or a half-seen one, and oddly enough your attention becomes just a little more sensitized and alert for that reason. It's this off balance-ness, arguably, that speaks to a specific Japanese aesthetic referenced in the trio's namesake, which can in very general terms be understood to be premised on the acceptance of imperfection.

"This is the simplest track I have ever been a part of," said Avissar to THUMP via email. "Matt (Terekke) and I were chillin, smoked a spliff, and laid down almost exactly what you hear on the record. 'Rx' is comprised of only two layers: Matt on the MPC and myself live-chopping an a pharma rant I found online. We debuted it later that night. This track is true wabi-sabi - we actually tried editing it but decided to let it be."

Pt. 1 is out today on Purple Trax.
