It’s the 21st Century, and a Junior Hockey Team Just Decided on a Racist Native American Logo

The Lake Erie Warriors' slogan is "You're only as good as your values."

Oh for fuck's sake. Who forgot to tell Lake Erie's National College Prospects Hockey League team that it's 2016—or any time past 1492, for that matter? Well, it was one of you, because they went ahead and created this disaster of a logo.

Yes, there are still sports teams that have Native American mascots, which are a perennial subject of debate. Those teams will argue that their mascots were created back when that shit was 'acceptable,' and that to change at this point would be bad for business—from a branding perspective. (Note: Money is never a legitimate excuse for perpetuating centuries-old harmful, tone-deaf racist stereotyping.) But here we have a team, in the 21st century, actually electing to create their own Tonto-level, dark-red-skinned, angry-looking, tomahawk-wielding stereotype to represent themselves. Hurrah.

The first look at their logo seems to have come from a March 28th post on the Warriors' website announcing the team (though it could have been added retroactively), but the image started circulating the internet yesterday, when it was highlighted by Paul Lukas of Uni Watch in the above tweet.

Here's a look at their team presentation from June 9th:

Ah, the most delicious irony that they chose for their slogan "You're only as good as your values."
