College Football Player's Season Over After Girlfriend Dumps Boiling Water on Him

His college football career is over because of an argument on Halloween.

A notable football player and possible NFL draft pick's college career is over because of a bizarre Halloween day incident with his girlfriend. Jonnu Smith, a tight end at Florida International, had boiling water dumped on him that day, which resulted in him suffering severe burns, according to the Miami Herald. Smith was burned on his neck, back, head, arm, and shoulder.

His girlfriend, Mary Gaspar, five months pregnant with their child, was charged with aggravated battery for the incident. She has been released on a pre-trial order.

Here's what Gaspar told FIU police after being arrested, via the Herald:

"The two argued through the day over the attention Smith was paying her and their relationship. While in Smith's dorm room and "feeling extremely emotional and stressed," she told police, she boiled a pot of water. Then, she walked over to Smith and poured it on him.

When Smith didn't react strongly enough for her, she started hitting him with her open hands, she told police."

This is obviously an odd and ugly scenario. Smith has been on campus since the incident but he's not playing. He was on watch lists for the best tight end award in each of the last three years and could be picked late in this spring's draft.
