72nd Ranked Player Roasts Herself During Upset of Serena Williams: 'I Think She's Surprised How Bad I Am'

Madison Brengle was self-deprecating while taking to her coach as she was in the middle of upsetting the best tennis player on the planet.

Do you know who Madison Brengle is? There's probably a 99 percent chance you don't. She's a tennis player who is obviously better than you and nearly everyone else on the planet. But she's only ranked No. 72 in the world right now—which means no one has ever heard of her.

Still, she just upset Serena Williams this week. But she was so bad that she was trash-talking herself during it. Seriously, WTA video caught her joking during a break in the match about how bad she was.

It's pretty funny to watch Brengle wonder if she plays worse if it'll catch Williams off guard. It's like she understands she's not in the same universe as Williams. At one point, Brengle and her coach Nicole Melicharare talking about how Williams might not return serve at some point because of some weird fluke—as if that's the only chance Brengle has.

"You mean like if it flies and it hits me in the body," she says, "and I die and so that's like how I go?"

It's like she was roasting herself mid-match.

"Do you feel like if I play even uglier off the return, that's a good idea?"

"I think she's surprised how bad I am."

It was actually Williams who was pretty bad. She made 88 unforced errors and Brengle won 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 but then lost in straight sets in the next round of the ASB Classic.
