Jad & The's “Low Budget Action Movie” is a Cinematic Space Jam

If you were born during or before the '90s, chances are you have a stack of old VHS tapes gathering dust somewhere in your parents' attic. Who could forget the olden days of huddling around the television, slipping that black brick of a tape from its worn jacket and into the VCR, and seeing red upon realizing it hadn't been re-wound (again)? Now rendered obsolete by DVDs and streaming services, one man's VHS trash is another man's inspiration for his next record.

Next month, Berlin-based producer Jad & The is releasing his new EP, Hollywood, which was named for the obscure samples he pulled from a bundle of dusty VHS tapes. The four-tracker, out mid-June, sees Jad return to his Beats of No Nation label for his solo debut (his previous showing on the Brisbane imprint was his new side-project with Charles Murdoch, Super Fun Bumper Edition), which includes three originals and a remix from Londoner Deejay Astral.

Today, THUMP is premiering B-side cut "Low Budget Action Movie," a jovially cosmic track full of warmth and whimsy. A subtle synth adds just the right amount of dancefloor drama—call it a cinematic space jam.

Over email, Jad tells THUMP that he used all kinds of electronics during the making of the EP. "I actually utilized Californian producer Urulu's Yamaha SY22 digital synth for the lead line in 'Low Budget Action Movie,' he adds. "I've been renting his room in Berlin whilst he's been back stateside and he was kind enough to leave some odd bits of gear, so hats off to him."

Listen to "Low Budget Action Movie" below. Jad & The's Hollywood EP is out on Beats of No Nation in mid-June (exact date TBD). Pre-order it here.
