Video: The Real Life Wolverine

"Seeing how human life works these days," says 80-year-old Werner Freund, "that's no longer a world I want to be part of."

"Seeing how human life works these days," says 80-year-old Werner Freund, "that's no longer a world I want to be part of." Now, the former German paratrooper would rather be a wolf than a man.

Having spent years living with indiginous populations around the globe, Freund has been raising and living with wild wolves in Germany for the last four decades, and now considers them his family. His wolf sanctuary in western Germany, spread over 25 acres, is home to 29 wolves -- six packs hailing from Europe, Siberia, Canada, the Arctic, and Mongolia -- which he acquired as cubs from zoos and animal parks, and reared mostly by himself.

Last January, Gersin Paya from VICE Germany and a small crew drove to the town of Merzig to meet Werner and help him feed raw deer meat to his furry brethren.
