READ A TRAGIC NOVEL ABOUT LOVE AND HARDSHIP

Through his novel Dawuk, Mahfud Ikhwan invites readers to see the rough lives of Mat Dawuk and Inayatun in East Java. The two are former preman who meet and fall in love in Malaysia, and decide to get married and go back to Dawuk’s hometown, Rumbuk Randu village. But the villagers hate both Mat Dawuk and Inayatun, so they’re stuck in an even darker tragedy. With his engaging prose, Ikhwan successfully built a realistic irony as Dawuk is all sweet, romantic, and tragic. — Sattwika Duhita

PARTY LIKE IT'S THE 90s AT 'ENERGIA'

There are more things to be nostalgic about from the ‘90s than the smooth R&B that we all still sing along to today. Those glorious nights of wild warehouse raves are greatly missed, too. The Jakarta-based collective Interrupted is hosting a party called Energia, where you can let it all out and party like we never left the ‘90s—or as if we remembered what it was like. Intense and explosive beats provided by Bing Luther, Random Brothers, Mayo and ØH will get you going all night long. See you there! —Dini Lestari

WATCH TODAY'S BEST LOCAL INDIE MUSICIANS AT 'OUT OF VOGUE VOL. 2'

Two young bands from North Sumatra will be showcasing their talent at Rossi Musik, Jakarta, this Saturday. Pullo, who's celebrating the release of their EP Age of New Life, plays a moodier, slightly darker post-punk that relies on thick bass lines, and a brooding atmosphere. Shadowplay, the second band from Medan, is pretty much the opposite—their brand of 90’s Bandung pop would bring to mind acts like La Luna or Mocca. Rounding up the line-up is indie pop darling, Bedchamber, early 2000s Trustkill-era of post-hardcore unit Arck and Bandung’s latest attempt at Titlefight-core, Noirless. —Yudhistira Agato
