Jeweller Tom Lynall spends hours carving little yellow emoji faces from colored pencils, gluing them together onto another pencil tip to make miniature emotional totem poles. Over the weekend Lynall's artwork topped the front page of Reddit, earning comments like "If I ever need brain surgery, I'd like you to do it," and an obligatory argument about the difference between the emoji and emoticon. With an emoji Bible in the works, and symbolic retellings of Moby Dick, Alice in Wonderland, and The Big Lebowski out in the world, this addition to the history of miniature graphite art is just one more reason to :D.

Aside from the emoji totem pole, Lynall also makes painstakingly detailed landscapes inside pencil tips and other micro art, which you can check out below.

See more of Tom Lynall's work on Instagram, and keep an eye out for the occasional photo of his lizard wearing a top hat.
