DiamondBacks Pitcher Leads Spring Training Instruction on Newtonian Physics

Spring training is a time to practice the fundamentals.

In an effort to spice up the slow-moving drudgery of spring training, Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Josh Collmenter has been leading informal study sessions on a variety of topics. Today, he brought in a dry erase board and started at the very beginning: physics. Above the din of the pumping clubhouse music, you can hear Collmenter discuss how Newton put forward his theory of gravity, how a boat floats on water, gravitational waves, and black holes.

According to AZ Central, Collmenter started the sessions a few days ago, and he got such a good response, he's going to continue doing it throughout the spring.

"We were sitting around talking about some history stuff and (I was) like, 'I'm just going to start teaching you guys things,'" said Collmenter, who held a less formal version of class over the weekend. "We just pick random topics and if anyone has a suggestion we'll talk about that. It's not always going to be as in-depth as this, but it sort of expounded upon what we did the first day. I think tomorrow's lesson will be a little more, not so practical, but a little more lighthearted I think."

Most of the crowd for today's lesson was from the pitching staff, since most positional players are just getting into camp now and have other things to do. Collmenter has another theory, however. "From what I've gathered, pitchers are the more intelligent species anyway, so it's a lot easier to talk to them than it would be some of the position players."

Sounds like Darwin is next.
