Tom Coughlin's Gives Fiery Final Press Conference, Snubs John Mara on Way Out

Former Giants coach Tom Coughlin gave a pretty impassioned farewell press conference.

The Giants put on one final press conference for Tom Coughlin, a goodbye press conference after he resigned yesterday following 12 years and two Super Bowl wins as the head coach in New York. It was about 20 minutes long, but it didn't really get going until about halfway through when, after thanking friends, family, and colleagues, Coughlin started talking about the higher purpose of football.

His voice rose as he got more excited talking about his past teams and his football philosophy. He seemed almost defiant in his final prepared remarks, ending with "Do I have to listen to any questions?" He did, and this is where he verged into Wussification of America territory, talking about the changes in the game he's seen. Mimicking players, Coughlin said, "I got a toothache, I'm out of the game. What? You got a what? A stiff neck?! I got a stiff neck 24 hours a day every day of my life! The hell has that got to do with playing?"

Then, when he was all done, he walked off the stage and blew right past Giants co-owner and CEO John Mara, barely acknowledging him.

Perhaps his fiery press conference was due more to the circumstances of his "resignation" than his pure love of football.
