Investigation Reveals Former Wake Forest Assistant "Provided or Attempted to Provide" Gameplan to Opponents

A former Deamon Deacon football player and assistant was allegedly providing proprietary information.

After being soundly beaten by Louisville on November 12, Wake Forest announced that it was investigating a "security breach" related to some documents a member of the staff found at the stadium the day before the game. Today, Wake Forest announced that the investigation found that Tommy Elrod, a former football player who became an assistant coach for 11 years under Jim Grobe, had "provided or attempted to provide confidential and proprietary game preparations on multiple occasions, starting in 2014."

Grobe resigned following the 2013 season—his fifth losing campaign in a row—and Dave Clawson took over in 2014. Clawson did not keep Elrod on staff, so he began work as a radio analyst for the Wake Forest IMG Radio Network. Wake Forest doesn't come out and say it, but the implication appears to be that Elrod was salty with not having been retained, and as a result tried undermining Clawson's tenure with the team. Elrod was fired from his position as a radio analyst and won't be calling games for Wake Forest anymore, or anyone else presumably.

Needless to say, Clawson was not too happy, and released a statement accompanying the school's own statement on the matter, which you can read in it's entirety here.

Statement from Dave Clawson, Wake Forest Head Football Coach:

I am extremely disappointed that our confidential and proprietary game preparation was compromised. It's incomprehensible that a former Wake Forest student-athlete, graduate-assistant, full-time football coach, and current radio analyst for the school, would betray his alma mater. We allowed him to have full access to our players, team functions, film room, and practices. He violated our trust which negatively impacted our entire program. I am glad we have taken steps to ensure it will not happen in the future. At this point, this is a matter for Ron Wellman and others to act on. My staff and I are focused on Temple and preparing the team for the Military Bowl.

Lost in all the intrigue: why did Elrod think Louisville needed an edge to beat Wake Forest?
